Volunteer

Our volunteer program is flexible to allow for varied interests and schedules. Some volunteers want to learn about gardening, some want to work at special events; we have friends who volunteer occasionally while others every Thursday or only during the holiday season. Please apply to be a volunteer and we'll contact you when we have a project that will interest you.

Groups interested in volunteering should complete and submit the online Group Visit form.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

On the Farm

Scheduled volunteer activities occur every Thursday & Friday from 10 am - 2 PM. Visit, meet the crew, learn more about the farm, and join in that day's activities. Make sure to wear sunscreen, layers of clothes, closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle.

Natural Bridges is a working farm. Projects include all types of activities:

  • Simple weeding
  • Harvest: strawberries, CSA crops, lavender and other flowers for drying
  • Planting new crops in early spring
  • Flower harvest and making CSA bouquets
  • Clearing out beds for new crops
  • Helping out in our farm kitchen

Projects are weather dependent and defined by the day's priorities. We often can't tell you in advance exactly what project you'll be working on. Apply Now

We are also looking for volunteers to prepare and serve lunch to our crew, trainees and volunteers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, usually from about 10am until 1pm. We have some supplies and seek donations to supplement our own organic produce.

If interested in any of these opportunities, please contact katep@homelessgardenproject.org

What Our Volunteers Say:

kitchen on the farm Bryon Says: "I volunteer at HGP because I get to be outside, get my hands dirty, an awesome workout, watch an incredible garden grow, smell fresh herbs and flowers, taste some of the fruits of my labors, meet and work alongside interesting people of all ages and stripes, and, best of all, what I do helps some really hard-working people turn their lives around."

Tricia Says: "There is such a strong sense of community at the Natural Bridges farm.  I always feel welcomed and have made many new friends there. Volunteering has been a  great way to learn more about farming and gardening.  Spending time on the farm inspires me to try to grow more of my own things. I would like to spend more of my time there!"

James Says: I've gained a tremendous amount of respect for all the people associated with HGP while at the same time learning valuable lessons in what organic, sustainable community based agriculture entails. It gives the homeless of Santa Cruz an opportunity to acquire life skills that will enable them to re-enter our community as our friends and neighbors, helping Santa Cruz to become a better place in which to live."

Allie Says: "I started volunteering for HGP for a myriad of reasons. What I've gotten in return from HGP has been invaluable. I honestly never imagined that my time spent of the farm would be as healing for me as it is for the trainees. When I came to volunteer, I had been without work for 10 months. HGP was the first place in months to remind me that my time was valuable. I recommend volunteering at hgp, or at least visiting the farm to everyone that I meet."
